Board Director success profile
Ballot candidates are selected by volunteers on PMI-DHC’s Nominating Committee. The nomination process is designed to create a team that possesses the full complement of skills necessary to fulfill the mission, strategic priorities, and goals of PMI-DHC. Ultimately, the Nominating Committee is looking for members who can shape the future of DHC.
In addition to the general criteria noted in the Rules of the Board below, the Board of Directors also completes an annual needs assessment to determine which skills are beneficial for new Board Directors to have.
The skills of a successful Board Director include:
- Collaboration and desire to create a fun and safe environment where everyone feels they belong.
- Shaping the future of PMI-DHC with long-term strategic thinking, transformational leadership and Chapter sustainability.
- Creating new and better ways to provide membership value and satisfaction, and for the chapter to succeed.
- Effectively building formal and informal connections inside and outside the chapter.
- Recognizing the value that different perspectives and cultures bring to DHC.
- Relating openly and comfortably with diverse groups of people.
- Stepping up to address difficult situations.
- Operating effectively, even when things are uncertain, or the way forward is unclear.
- Earning the confidence and trust of others through honesty, integrity, authenticity, and empathy.
- Painting a compelling picture of our vision and strategy, which motivates and commits others to action.
- Desire to engage in leading the way in building a vibrant and impactful PMI-DHC Community.
- Delivering on the fiduciary responsibilities.

Time Commitment & Expectations
Service on the Board requires a significant time commitment. Directors serve a two-year term and as part of the annual service, they are expected to:
- Commit to up to 40 hours for Board-related work a month.
- Plan, prepare for, and attend monthly in-person Board meetings, two strategic plan sessions, and other relevant meetings.*
- Participate in additional virtual or in-person Board or Chapter related meetings as needed.
- Participate in any required PMI professional development programs.
- Prepare and lead meetings with their team of volunteers, engaging in Volunteer development and excellence.
- Embrace PMI’s Culture values and DHC’s Board Guiding principles.
In addition to the above Director time commitments, newly elected Directors are expected to:
- Dedicate time and preparation for required professional development and smooth transition with the outgoing Board Member and onboarding to the board.
- Attend the New Board Member Orientation and Transition sessions pre-term. While service begins on September 1st, onboarding activities commence after the election.
- Complete required virtual professional development programs.
- Engage with the outgoing Board member for all transition activities.
*Note: PMI-DHC covers expenses for out of province events when Board Members are invited to attend. This would include sessions such as Global Leadership Institute Meetings (LIM) and Regional Meetings (R3).

Eligibility & Qualifications

What are the criteria?
Any applicant must be:
- A member in good standing for six months with PMI-DHC.
- Have no conflict of interest (all PMI members and volunteers are bound to the PMI Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct.
- Meet the requirements for education, certification, professional and volunteer experience and other qualifications as specified by PMI-DHC Elections policy & procedures.
- Although not mandatory, it is preferred that candidates have PMI credentials, as well as PMI-DHC volunteer experience or equivalent.
The following governance information outlines important information related to service on the Board of Directors and the Call for Nominations and election process. Please review in full to determine your eligibility, availability, and interest to serve. PMI-DHC bylaws are also a good frame of reference.
All candidates are obligated to abide by the established Nomination and Election Rules of the Board as follows:
- Use of PMI Funds and/or Resources. No funds or resources of PMI-DHC shall be used to promote the nomination or election of any candidate, except for information posted to DHC Board Nominations and Election web pages or through other PMI-DHC media as official communication of the election process.
- Candidate Campaigning and Communication. Campaigning is strictly prohibited. Candidates may only communicate one-on-one in response to communications initiated by another PMI-DHC member regarding their candidacy and only if the communication focuses on their qualifications. Mass communications by any means (e.g., postal mail, telecommunications, e-mail [regardless of whether the message is sent one at a time or simultaneously to a mailing list], and all social networks, etc.) are prohibited. If candidates have questions regarding communications, they should seek advice of PMI-DHC Governance Director.
- Campaign Materials. No candidate or PMI-DHC member may utilize any campaign materials such as posters, buttons/lapel pins, digital communications, social media, group activities or sponsorships to promote a candidate.
- Candidate Communications with PMI-DHC. The candidate is encouraged to discuss with current/former Directors or a member of the Nominating Committee. Specific requirements of the position in terms of time, expense, meeting schedules, and administration should be explored.
About the Nominating Committee and Interview Panel
The Nominating Committee is a group of volunteers in charge of reviewing candidates for the Board positions up for election. The interview panel members will interview the screened nominated candidates for further processing in the voting process. Upon completion of the interviews, the committee selects the candidates to be on the ballot, giving the membership the opportunity to vote for their preferred candidates to fill the positions.
