PMI-DHC Cares! We have one very important initiative that the Board is proud to support “Social Goodwill”— giving back to our community. This year, our members voted, and PMI-DHC’s priority is to raise support for St. Vincent Pallotti’s Kitchen (the Kitchen).
The Kitchen is Durham Outlook’s core program. It’s the only seven-day-a-week, 365-day-a-year soup kitchen in the Durham region. A choice, no one should have to make. The Kitchen served it’s first meal on October 15, 1990, and today, no one is ever turned away. With the leadership of nearly 1,000 volunteers a month, the Kitchen serves between 150 to 200 meals per day, approximately 50,000 to 60,000 meals per year. Since their founding in 1990, they have served more than 1.4 million meals.
Through partnerships with other non-profit organizations and local churches, meal tickets are distributed free-of-charge. For those unable to access free tickets, a four-course, restaurant-style meal costs $1.50. If a patron is unable to pay, they are served anyway. Children under 12 always eat free.
As you can imagine, it’s a tall order to help individuals and families experiencing poverty and food insecurity, and the Kitchen needs our help. We all know how much food actually costs. PMI-DHC is a strong community and we can make a difference — our kindness and generosity will help the Kitchen provide relief to those in need. For every dollar donated by our members through our events, the PMI-DHC Board of Directors will match.
Please consider supporting our fundraising initiatives at events throughout the year. You may very well be helping your neighbour(s), friend(s), or family member(s).
